TwitterAs Twitter is slowly becoming one of the most popular online social networks, currently only beaten by Facebook and MySpace, people are beginning to create tools to increase and enhance the Twitter experience.

If you still struggle to understand the Twitter hype, here are some tools that may change your mind. To benefit from some of these tools, you don't even have to use Twitter yourself.

WeFollow

WeFollow is a user powered Twitter directory that simply lists which people are the most popular (followed) by category. While Obama is top in politics, Coldplay heads music and kevinrose is the most popular tech Twitterer.

You can add yourself to wefollow by tweeting @wefollow indicating up to three #tags to describe your Twitter character. The Tweet is automatically created when you hit the "Add yourself to WeFollow" button on their homepage.

Twitalyzer

Here we have a tool that analyzes the impact of any Twitter user, based on influence, signal, generosity, velocity and clout.

But this is just the tip of the iceberg. Furthermore, the tool summarizes the recent activity of the analyzed user, and provides means to compare Twitter usage and benchmarks of success of several Twitter users.

It's a great tool to find out how influential you are or how you compare to your peers.

TweetStats

TweetStats is a less overwhelming alternative to Twitalyzer. It doesn't allow for comparisons and doesn't analyze so many details. However, it returns more interesting graphs for your twittering statistics and a TweetCloud which reveals what your tweets are all about.

Thummit QuickRate

This website analyzes Twitter conversations and extracts the topics that are popular, for example movies, products, buzzwords or tools. Using sentiment analysis QuickRate determines whether a Twitter update is positive, neutral or negative.

Twitter opinions

Other than having an influence on the results by tweeting your opinion on any given topic, you can vote for topics and leave a comment on their website.

Twitt(url)y

This site tracks down the 100 most popular URLs shared through Twitter during the past 24 hours. It has a Digg-like style, but your vote is not the click of a button, rather you would have to share a specific URL.

Twitter URLs

The site lists the first person that shared the URL, followed by the three most recent Tweets that contained the same URL. In the example above there were 145 active tweets during the past 24 hours.

On Twitturly you can also scan a specific profile for URLs or see the Top100 tweeted URLs of the people that you follow. Extremely useful tools!

What is your favorite Twitter tool and how do you make use of it? And if you don't follow MakeUseOf on Twitter yet, you can do so here.
