TwitterAs Twitter is slowly becoming one of the most popular online social networks, currently only beaten by Facebook and MySpace, people are beginning to create tools to increase and enhance the Twitter experience.

If you still struggle to understand the Twitter hype, here are some tools that may change your mind. To benefit from some of these tools, you don't even have to use Twitter yourself.

WeFollow

WeFollow is a user powered Twitter directory that simply lists which people are the most popular (followed) by category. While Obama is top in politics, Coldplay heads music and kevinrose is the most popular tech Twitterer.

popular Twitter

You can add yourself to wefollow by tweeting @wefollow indicating up to three #tags to describe your Twitter character. The Tweet is automatically created when you hit the "Add yourself to WeFollow" button on their homepage.

Twitalyzer

Here we have a tool that analyzes the impact of any Twitter user, based on influence, signal, generosity, velocity and clout.

analyzing Twitter

But this is just the tip of the iceberg. Furthermore, the tool summarizes the recent activity of the analyzed user, and provides means to compare Twitter usage and benchmarks of success of several Twitter users.

It's a great tool to find out how influential you are or how you compare to your peers.

TweetStats

TweetStats is a less overwhelming alternative to Twitalyzer. It doesn't allow for comparisons and doesn't analyze so many details. However, it returns more interesting graphs for your twittering statistics and a TweetCloud which reveals what your tweets are all about.

Twitter tag cloud

Thummit QuickRate

This website analyzes Twitter conversations and extracts the topics that are popular, for example movies, products, buzzwords or tools. Using sentiment analysis QuickRate determines whether a Twitter update is positive, neutral or negative.

Twitter opinions

Other than having an influence on the results by tweeting your opinion on any given topic, you can vote for topics and leave a comment on their website.

Twitt(url)y

This site tracks down the 100 most popular URLs shared through Twitter during the past 24 hours. It has a Digg-like style, but your vote is not the click of a button, rather you would have to share a specific URL.

Twitter URLs

The site lists the first person that shared the URL, followed by the three most recent Tweets that contained the same URL. In the example above there were 145 active tweets during the past 24 hours.

On Twitturly you can also scan a specific profile for URLs or see the Top100 tweeted URLs of the people that you follow. Extremely useful tools!

What is your favorite Twitter tool and how do you make use of it? And if you don't follow MakeUseOf on Twitter yet, you can do so here.

The Kick-Start Your Online Business Needs

by Steve Filed

Simply finding and deciphering all the pieces to the Internet marketing success puzzle is quite a challenge. Besides the fact that there is a LOT to know, there is also plenty of worthless information out there. Filtering and categorizing all the knowledge is no easy feat. Reading about list building is one thing; implementing a profitable list building strategy is another. Likewise, studying PayPerClick is much easier than enjoying anything greater than a negative Return-On-Investment with AdWords. …and so on.

OK. You know reading and studying won’t cut it. You must take action of course. But WHERE do you focus your action? How do you know what action to take? Your time is limited. You probably have a full-time job in the beginning.

I’ve already told you how important Relentless Focused Action is. I’m sure you believe in and understand the concept wholly. But action is wasted effort unless you KNOW where to focus it! Where to focus IS the sixty-four thousand dollar question of course. Allow me to veer off the path here a bit and help you in a way you may or may not subscribe to at the moment.

If you do not yet embrace the theory of “The Law of Attraction”, I suggest you consider the following: The Law of Attraction will guide your focus and efforts for you. Instead of fretting and stewing about what to do or how to do it, there is an easier way!

Honestly, I am not going Zen-do on you. I am the most logical and scientific thinker there is, but there is more to this world than logic or science can sometime explain. The Law of Attraction won’t do your work for you. You still must offer up the blood, sweat, and sometimes tears. The Law of Attraction simply helps you choose the correct road out of the thousands of possible dead-ends.

Here’s how to tap the Law of Attraction: First you must limit these kinds of thoughts:

“I don’t like my job.”
“I want to quit my job.”
“I’m tired of having a boss.”
“I’m tired of living paycheck to paycheck.”
“I worry about how long my old car will last.”
“I can’t afford the health insurance I need.”
“My retirement account is not enough.” It’s likely your list goes on and on…

The Law of Attraction states that our thoughts direct our lives. Just thinking how much you hate living “paycheck to paycheck” all but insures “paycheck to paycheck” is how you will continue living.

The negative energy of those thoughts perpetuates that way of life. Instead, notice when those negative thoughts begin and replace them with outcome based positive ones. For example, instead of “wanting to quit your job”, imagine working for yourself. The Law of Attraction’s power is leveraged by imagining self-employment instead of fretting about your current boss.

But we’re not finished yet putting the Law of Attraction to work. We can fine tune it further. The process is much more powerful if you focus on not just “what” you want, but also WHY you want it. For example, instead of only imagining a larger bank account, focus on how your life will change with more income.

Think of the peace of mind it will bring, the ability to travel, how it will feel to pay off all the bills, the satisfaction of giving to charity, etc. Thoughts of those outcomes will create the mind set required to achieve them; it’s just that simple!

Actively try this technique for a few months and see for yourself how things begin falling into place for you. Your road becomes clearer! It rather amazing how well it works!

Luckily, there's no shortage of ways to spread the word. Blogs, social networks, instant messenger, and mobile phones are some of the many ways to let others know about the best content on the web. Here are our 20 favorite ways to share a great blog post:

Sharing Via Social Media:

1. Using Twitter to Tweet and Share: Perhaps the fastest and most effective way to share a great blog post is through Twitter. Sharing or retweeting a link in Twitter can spread like wildfire. Use a URL shortener such as tinyurl or bit.ly to shorten links to fit within 140 characters.

4. Post on MySpace Profile: Don't forget about the world's second largest social network when sharing your favorite articles. Post the link to your MySpace profile so your friends can enjoy it too.

5. Posting to LinkedIn: Some blog posts are worthy of being shared by your business network on LinkedIn. Post a link to the Network Updates area in the homepage.

8. Sharing on FriendFeed: The social media aggregator FriendFeed has a vibrant community who love to share videos, links, and pictures. Use the FriendFeed bookmarklet to quickly share a good blog post to FriendFeed.

9. Adding to Reddit: Reddit is another great social media site for sharing and voting on articles. It's quick and easy to submit a link

Sharing Via Blogs:

10. Reblogging Great Posts: Blogging about a great article is one of the best ways to engage with the topics being discussed. Post a link, write some commentary, and share it with all of your readers. And don't forget to share your own blog post as well!

11. Sharing via Google Reader: Google Reader has a great feature for sharing blog posts. If you use Google Reader as your news reader of choice, all you have to do is click the "share" button at the bottom of blog posts to share it with all of your Google friends. You can also add notes and comment as well.

12. Posting on Tumblr or Posterous: If you want to share something via a blog, but don't want to write a full blog post about it, there are great options for that as well, primarily Tumblr and Posterous. They are the quick and easy versions of full-fledged blogs, ideal for posting about pictures and blog posts.

Useful Tools for Sharing

Shareaholic Image

13. TwitThat: TwitThat is one of the quickest and easiest tools for sharing blog posts. It will post to your Twitter quickly and easily. Just add the bookmarklet to your browser toolbar and click it whenever you come across a great post.

14. Shareaholic Firefox Extension: There are a lot of great social networks where you can share a great post, but who wants to visit Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and LinkedIn to share a post? If you are a Firefox user, then install Shareaholic, an extension that goes on your toolbar. It provides quick links for sharing to all of the major social networks.

15. Ping.fm: If you're a busy person, you might not have time to share on all of these social media websites. Isn't there an easy way to share a blog post everywhere, all at once? Ping.fm links to all of your social networks and sends your updates to LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, to any other website you wish to link to it. You can even update from your instant messenger. It's the perfect solution for those who like to share content all over the web.

Other Ways to Share:

ShareThis Image

16. Emailing: Email has always been a good way to share articles, especially with close friends and family. Although it may not reach as many people as Twitter, it will definitely reach anyone who isn't as deep into social media as you are.

17. Texting: Did you know you that many blogs, including Mashable, support sharing an article via text message? Look out for the ShareThis button (three green dots connected by lines) under blog posts and select the "text" option. iPhones and mobile browsers have made it easy to read links sent by texts.

18. Changing IM Statuses: You probably have dozens, if not hundreds of IM contacts. Share great posts with all of them by changing your IM status to a great post you just read or wrote.

19. IMing a friend: If changing an IM status seems too impersonal, then just IM your friends the link. You can then have a fun chat about the blog post.

20. Talking to Friends: If you don't have a computer handy, then don't forget about the analog approach - call a friend or tell him or her over coffee about a great blog post you read. You can always send the link later if necessary.

How Do You Share Blog Posts?

This post only scratches the surface of sharing in social media. There are hundreds of tools and resources at your disposal. If you have another great way to share blog posts, please add it in the comments.

The Simplest Way to Clear Out Your Email Inbox

Post written by Leo Babauta. Follow me on Twitter.

In a sentence: Don't reply or even read most of your emails.

Your inbox can be cleared in minutes with that method.

Here's how I suggest you do it:

  1. Select all junk mail, newsletters, routine notifications, auto-replies, joke emails, chain mail, ads, anything else not super important. Delete em.
  2. Select about half (or more) of the other emails that you know are not important, just from the subject line. Archive em.
  3. Quickly read through the rest, archiving almost every one of them. Select a few to reply to or act on (5 at the most). Those will be your most important.
  4. Reply to them in three sentences or less, act on them immediately, or put them on your calendar to do later.

Done.

Following this method, you can process your inbox in  less than 5 minutes if you're quick (use keyboard shortcuts).

What? But … what about all those emails I need to reply to? President Obama gets thousands of letters a day, and only reads 10 of them. This method forces you to simplify, to focus on what's really and truly important.

Then, when you've saved all that time you might normally spend on email, go and Do Something Amazing. Oh, and only do this once or twice a day at most — the rest of the day, stay out of email.

Try it for a day or two. Tell me if the world falls apart. I bet it won't. If it does, I'll buy you a beer. If it doesn't, you owe me one.

This is about something a bit deeper: our need to reply and act on every single request that comes in, rather than to take control of our work days and do what we know is important. You don't need to respond to every email, act on every request, or even read everything that comes your way. You can choose the essential ones, and then get to work on what really matters. And if you tell others that you're doing this, that you're not going to reply to every email, they'll eventually stop expecting you to reply.

Note: I realize this method won't work for everyone … but I did say this would be a simple method. You can use it to get even simpler than the steps I listed above — just choose 1-5 emails to respond to/act on, and archive all the rest.

Read more about simple productivity, focus and getting great things done in my book, The Power of Less.

Who are you?

Who are you? The way you answer this simple question is what we call your identity. And the need to act consistent with your identity turns out to be one of the strongest forces known to man.

But who you are, how you behave, the way you carry yourself is different depending on who you're with isn't it? In fact, if I put you in a room with all your family, friends, and coworkers...you wouldn't know how to act!

We often have very different identities for the different communities of our lives. And its useful to know what those identities are...because they're influencing you right now.

For example, who are you in your family? Are you the funny one? The serious one? The overachiever? The underachiever? The rebel?

What about at work...are you the smart one? The lazy one? The honest one? The creative one?

Once your identity is established, it's incredibly hard to change it. Because you're compelled to act consistent with your identity no matter what. For example if you're the clown at family gatherings, even if you don't feel like telling jokes, or if you've grown out of it, you may feel compelled to do so anyway because...you're the "clown."

If you're the underachiever among your friends, when things start going well...you may sabotage yourself because hey...you're the "underachiever" and that's the 'you' people are comfortable with.

It's important to realize what your "relative identity" is with all the different communities of your life. Because they're no doubt shaping you.

The question is are they shaping you the way you want?

If not, it's up to you to change it. But remember your identity is not only your perception of yourself, but the way others perceive you. And people usually don't like change. It scares them. So they'll probably be uncomfortable with the new you and want you to stay the same.

So you have to be courageous enough to change and stick with it despite what those people think.

So the question is who are you? Or more importantly...who do you want to be?
